After the success of my last post about the sniping on Wasteland and what not, I have decided to continue this ‘ The 5! ‘ thing I’ve got going. If your reading this and haven’t read my last post you can find it here at ZOMGHOW or on N4G , thanks to Darren for submitting and thanks to the guys at N4G for accepting it. Well anyway, in this post I’ll be discussing the 5 most under-rated games of this generation. Also I’d like to point out that I only have a PS3, so if I miss out on any underrated Xbox or Wii games just comment on this post talking about them so readers will know about them. This list is in no particular order by the way.
1. Dark Sector
Well I’m gonna be honest here, I never actually bought this game but I did play it alot so I have a fair idea of what it is like. The game actually did get quite a good response from reviewers in magazines such as PlayStation : The Official Magazine but from looking at my PSN friends list and online gaming communities it didn’t really get the attention it deserved. The protagonist in the game, Hayden Tenno , suffered from congenital analogia and during the beginning mission he is exposed to so
me radio-active shiz and gets mutated causing him to grow a three blade throwing weapon called Glaive.
Now the Glaive is probably the coolest weapon I’ve ever seen in a game. It’s basically a big ninja throwing star that you can control with your mind or something. The PS3 version of the game capitalised on this function by allowing players to control the Glaive using the motion control of the sixaxis when it is zooming about. Along with the glaive you are also exposed to a range of guns. The shooting of the game is very similar to the shooting of game’s such as Gear of War and Uncharted with the rolling and the cover and all that craic. Seeing as your right hand has been Glaive-ified you have to fire your weapons with your left hand which is unusual in games as most protagonists fire with the right hand, that’s another plus on this game for me as I’m a lefty.
As you progress through the story your Glaive skills improve and you learn new ways of throwing and controlling it. I would talk more about the plot but as I never owned the game I never got a chance to indulge in the story, however I did play the multiplayer quite a bit. The multiplayer in this game was fairly bitching, it’s been a while since I’ve played it, thought I remember one game mode when a player was Hayden and everyone else’s objective was to take him out, now being Hayden you had some bitchin’ skillz to play around with. From becoming invisible to guiding the Glaive around the map chopping limbs of several unfortunate enemies. It was a fairly gory game as well, for all you fans of the blood. It was a solid game that got mixed reviews from reviewers and was barely recognized by gamers. It has a demo on the Ps store and there may be one on Xbox marketplace (not so sure though) . So if your interested you could download it and give it a whirl a try, and see what you think. It would be a well worth buy if you see it any of the shops as it’s quite a rare game to see on the shelves. Oh yeah that graphic were pretty damn amazing too, nearly forgot about that.
2. Crackdown
Right, even though I said I’d probably miss out on under-rated Xbox games, I couldn’t possibly miss out on this golden gem. Being a PS3 guy I don’t really know what sorta response this game got from Xbox players or even reviewers but I’d never a
actually heard of it until I played it at a friends. It wasn’t like the other Xbox exclusive’s that everyone knew about even if you didn’t own a Xbox Halo, Gears and Fable are prime examples of Xbox exclusives that are so big that even PS3 gamers know a bit about them and their characters. This game was similar to games such as Grand Theft Auto with its open world and ability to cause havoc wherever you went. But unlike this game took causing havoc to a new level as your character progressed he grown stronger, faster and just all round better. With a fully maxed out character you had the ability to leap from buildings and knock seven shades of shit outa people, no sweat. Along with all this madness of fight and jumping, the vehicles in the game could transform into cooler version of themselves. All in all this was a really good game if you just wanted to have fun, the graphics were cartoony but good graphic don’t make a good game after all. Also, there is a sequel coming out, which will hopefully get more attention and it would be awesome if it was on the PS3, I mean whenever I first played this game I was thinking about getting an Xbox just to play it, it was so fun.
3.Warhawk
A PS3 exclusive that just didn’t get the love it deserved, hell I bet most 360 owners don’t even know about this game. It had a following on the Playstation, though but it never really got big enough due to the fact that people were more than likely playing COD4 and Resistance 1. Similar to Crackdown in the way that it had Cartoon graphics but amazing fun gameplay. It was one of, if not the first, online only game’s for the PS3. Although it may have had offline split screen, but the main game took place online.
The maps were huge and the game mode’s were pretty damn fun, you had a few choice’s as to how to get around the map, by foot, by truck, by tank, or plane. Going by plane was probably the safest way if your were a skilled pilot. It is one of the only game’s that I’ve played that it actually takes a bit of skill to be good at it and rank up. It was a third person shooter which is a rare thing for an online game as many these days are first person. I think it was the first full game you could download from the Ps Store (but I could be wrong). As well as brilliant gameplay and intense online, it also had a few amazing downloadable content packs. Even though the game is well over two years old, there is still a strong community of players still playing it online so if you pick up a copy or download and join in on the action you’re in for a treat! Although you need a lot of patience as when you first start out playing you’ll be getting killed more times to last you a life time by the Vets of the game.
4. Army of Two
In my opinion both the first game in this series and The 40th day were terribly under-rated games. It was the only real shooter I can think of that actually let you customize the shit out of your gun.
The story’s in both game’s were fantastic, although the story of the sequel could have been longer, the moral choice’s you were given throughout the game made up for. Just like Dark Sector it took advantage of the gameplay style that Uncharted and Gears are recognized for, there is more to the gameplay in them games but you know what I mean. Army of Two had many wonderful slow-mo sections where you’d have to pull off some sort of crazy back to back sniping shiz that quite frankly was pretty awesome. As well, the agrro system in the game was pretty darn cool. And for anyone who hate’s on these game’s….just admit it, you had no-one to play it split-screen. I actually think its impossible for anyone not to enjoy these games when playing split screen with a friend, but perhaps playing single player does suck.
5. Haze
Haze, well Haze was over-rated before it came out but then under-rated when it was actually released, weirdly. It got hated on so much when released people were too embarrassed to be seen playing it and resorted to trading it in. On the run up to the release of this game people were bumming it up so much calling it a Halo Killer and what not but then when they actually played it they hated it. I mean, it wasn’t the best game ever but it got hated on way too much.
Sure the graphics weren’t as good as they were in the screen shots and the story was short, but they counteract those bad points it was one of the first game’s to have split-screen online. This was an amazing feature in my opinion.
I think more games should start doing it, the actual online itself wasn’t three bad either. Another great thing about Haze was the offline split-screen with bots. This showed offline gamers that not all game companies have forgotten about them. Also (correct me if I’m wrong) Haze introduced the throwing knife in online gaming which is now ever so popular in Modern Warfare 2. So the story with Haze is, if you liked, like it. Don’t let haters turn you off from a game.
So yeah, that’s my Top 5 under rated games of this generation. If you have any games that you feel are under-rated feel free to spread the word through the comments section below.
